ATO: The optimization layer that comes after LLMO
SEO got you found. LLMO got you cited. ATO gets you used. Why optimizing for autonomous AI agent selection is the next frontier.

There are now over 10,000 MCP servers in the ecosystem. 97 million monthly SDK downloads. Every major AI provider — Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft — has adopted MCP as the standard for agent-to-tool interaction.
When an AI agent needs a tool, it searches. It finds candidates. It picks one.
The question nobody is asking yet: what determines which tool gets picked?
The gap between mention and execution
LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) is having its moment. GEO, AEO, LLMO — the SEO industry has spawned a family of acronyms for optimizing content so AI systems cite your brand.
This matters. But it stops at Stage 1.
When ChatGPT mentions your service in a response, that’s a mention. When Claude Code autonomously calls your API to complete a task — without a human ever asking for you by name — that’s an execution. That’s a transaction.
LLMO optimizes for mentions. ATO optimizes for executions.
The difference is the same as the difference between an ad impression and a purchase.
What is ATO?
ATO (Agent Tool Optimization) is the practice of optimizing your tools, APIs, and services so AI agents autonomously discover, select, and execute them.
Three stages:
Stage 1: Be recognized. AI systems know you exist. Your docs are in training data. You have an llms.txt. Structured data is in place. This is LLMO territory. Necessary, but not sufficient.
Stage 2: Be selected. When an agent searches for a tool, yours appears in the candidate list and wins. Your tool name is searchable. Your description clearly states purpose, context, and return values. Your schema is precise. This is ATO’s core contribution — the layer LLMO doesn’t cover.
Stage 3: Be used reliably. Once selected, your tool executes successfully. Errors are handled. Responses are useful. The agent comes back. This is where per-call revenue, retention, and compounding value live.
The data
Two recent research papers provide the empirical foundation:
97.1% of MCP tool descriptions contain at least one quality defect. Out of 856 tools across 103 servers, researchers identified six critical description components and 18 “smell” categories — quality defects that mislead agents. More than half fail to clearly state their purpose. (arXiv 2602.14878)
Optimized descriptions achieve 72% selection probability vs 20% baseline. In competitive scenarios with five functionally equivalent servers, the one with standard-compliant descriptions captured 72% of selections. A 3.6x advantage. (arXiv 2602.18914)
The ecosystem is competing, and almost nobody is optimized.
Four dimensions of agent-readiness
ToolRank Score measures tools across four dimensions:
Findability (25%) — Can agents discover you? Registry presence across Smithery, MCP Registry, npm. Category tagging. Verified and deployed status.
Clarity (35%) — Can agents understand you? Description quality across six components: purpose, usage examples, error handling, parameter descriptions, return descriptions, constraints. This is the highest-weight dimension because research shows it has the largest impact on selection.
Precision (25%) — Is your interface precise? Type definitions for every parameter. Enum constraints. Default values. Required field declarations.
Efficiency (15%) — Are you token-efficient? Estimated token cost of your tool definitions. Total tool count (5-15 is optimal; accuracy degrades past 20).
The SEO parallel
If you understand SEO, you already understand ATO. The concepts are parallel. The target has changed.

Open source
The scoring logic is fully open source. Level A (rule-based) and Level B (embedding) scoring are transparent and auditable. Transparency builds trust, and trust is what makes a score meaningful.

In 2026, most tool builders don’t know what ATO is. The same window is open.
